Here are some current avenues we’re implementing and some we’re exploring for making Cully Neighborhood Farm an accessible educational resource…
1) Cully Young Farmer’s Project: With the help of students from Concordia University and the University of Portland, we are teaching weekly garden glasses to K-2 students from Trinity Lutheran School using the Life-Lab Garden Curriculum (life-lab.org). In order to support this education program, we are building a separate learning garden on-site inspired by Life-Lab Gardens at UC Santa Cruz and in the Santa Cruz, CA public schools. Our Trinity Lutheran fall and spring programs run weekly for 6 weeks and 12 weeks respectively. Come Spring 2012, our program will expand to all grades at Trinity Lutheran and our learning garden will be available for hire to school groups and community groups for hour long garden classes. The rate will be $3.00/per student. In addition to training university students in garden education at Concordia and U of P, we will offer garden education training to community volunteers who would like to become qualifed to teach classes to Trinity Lutheran students.
This grant is funded by East Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District and fiscally sponsored by Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon.
If you would like more information about participating in one of these programs, contact michael (at) cullyneighborhoodfarm.org
2) Life-skills training: Michael does life-skills-training for people with disabilities through the brokerage system (He is currently registered as a provider through Independence NW, Mentor Oregon, and Community Pathways). If you or somebody you know is receiving supports or if you are a provider or provider organization, feel free to contact us and set up an appointment to come to the farm just as an activity or to do hands-on life-skills training through the brokerage system and talk to Michael about becoming a client. The farm is a unique opportunity for people with disabilities to gain some volunteer/work experience in a unique setting, with people who understand how to accommodate people’s needs.
3) Volunteer days (see “volunteer” section under Community Tab):
Avenues we are exploring:
1) Field trips for elder adults in a neighboring assisted living facility
2) Farm-related workshops
